Find Relief for a Heartburn with These Simple Methods

Heartburn is caused due to a medical condition called gastrointestinal reflux. It causes the contents of the stomach move up and into the food pipe. This causes extreme discomfort and a burning sensation in the throat and chest.

Heartburn is caused mostly due to the food intake. The most common reasons are alcohol, caffeine, acidic food, and juices. The diaphragm is the primary muscle that prevents heartburn. But when the muscle relaxes, it causes food to go up the food pipe. This creates the sensation of heartburn as we know it.

The burning sensation is caused when stomach acid comes in contact with the esophagus. A heartburn even leads to a change in taste, coughing, and change in voice. It can last for several hours. Eventually, it can lead to more serious conditions as well.

You can try these heartburn remedies for relief. However, if it lasts for a longer period, it’s best to consult a doctor immediately. Here are a few simple remedies you can try to ease the discomfort of heartburn.

Quit Smoking

Heartburn is a condition that is most commonly experienced by smokers. Smoking has several health hazards. Apart from the regular dangers, it is also known to worsen the condition of heartburn. It is best to avoid smoking if you’re already experiencing heartburn.

Wear Loose Clothes

Heartburn is caused due to the contents of your stomach coming up your food pipe. The acid from your stomach is what causes the discomfort. Tight clothes only worsen the situation. It binds the stomach, making food move up the pipe. If you’re experiencing heartburn, the first thing you should do is to loosen your belt or dress. This should give you heartburn relief.

Chew Some Gum

Several specialists suggest chewing gum for heartburn relief. Gum makes you salivate, which dilutes the acid in the gut. It washes it away and gives you relief. It is also a simple remedy that you can resort to when you don’t have other solutions on hand. If you still don’t feel better, you can try some of the other techniques we’ve mentioned.

Elevate The Upper Body

Since the food comes up the esophagus, you can slow down the process by sitting up. This ensures that the upper body is vertical, hence harder for the food to move in the upward direction. People who lie down for too long are prone to experiencing heartburn. If you’ve been sitting for too long, walk around for a bit of heartburn relief.

Mix Baking Soda In Water

Baking soda is known to have an amazing effect when it comes to helping with heartburn. Baking soda neutralizes stomach acids, being a base. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda in water and drink it slowly. Make sure to drink and eat slowly when you experience heartburn. This way, you’ll give the food enough time to be properly ingested. This is a simple heartburn remedy you can use right from your own kitchen.

Watch Your Weight

Being overweight increases the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease. You are also more prone to having heartburn. The excessive weight adds pressure on the esophagus. It causes muscles to become weak over time.

Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight. Physical activity will also improve metabolism and digestion as well.

Eat More Fruits

Some fruits contain antacids. They help reduce acid reflux and keep you comfortable. This includes fruits like banana and apple, to name a few. Eat one every day. You can also have them before bedtime to prevent uneasiness.

Fruits also have high vitamins and minerals. Eat fruits on a daily basis as a natural remedy for heartburn.

Eat At The Right Time

Ensure that you eat at least 3 hours before bed. Also, eat smaller meals and sit straight when you eat. Regulating your food intake can benefit you as well. Your digestion will also improve, thus reducing instances of heartburn. If you follow these suggestions, you can significantly lower the risk of heartburn.

Stay Relaxed

If you are over stressed or worried for extended periods of time, it can have an impact on your health in the form of heartburn. Remain calm and try methods like meditation to relax. This can give you some heartburn relief.

Change Diet

If you have been experiencing heartburn, it is best to change your diet and avoid foods that can cause heartburn. This includes spicy foods, caffeinated drinks, tomato, garlic, and alcohol. Foods that are acidic and have high citrus content can also lead to heartburn. Unhealthy foods that have high amounts of unsaturated oils must also be avoided. They’re one of the main reasons behind heartburn.

Eat healthily and on time to avoid heartburn. A healthy lifestyle can do a lot to ensure that you’re doing the most to keep heartburn at bay.
