Diabetes is a chronic disease, which, if not treated on time can be very critical and can lead to many complications. Since there are no symptoms in the early stages of diabetes, it is wise to go for a regular sugar check. Since diabetes is also sometimes a genetic issue and if you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, being tested is a proactive measure you can take to save yourself from further complications.

The A1C test is a check for type 2 diabetes which says how well you are managing your diabetes if you are already diagnosed with it. This blood test shows the average levels of blood sugar maintained in the two-three months’ period. The higher the average blood glucose levels are, the more is the risk of diabetes and related complications. The reason the test is so popular amongst the diabetic patients because it does not require fasting and gives the average count of the blood sugar measure over a period instead of a single point of time.

If the A1C score is 6.5 percent or above, chances are, you are suffering from type 2 diabetes. To keep away from the complications, here are some of the steps you can follow to lower A1C levels.

Stay active
Fitness plays a huge part in keeping the diabetic level in control. It does not always have to be a formal exercise method but can be anything such as riding a stationary bike indoors, or taking your pet for a walk, playing some sports, or opting for regular bike outdoors. A 20-minute walk after lunch is very effective to lower A1C levels. According to the experts, moving around for even two minutes’after an hour’s work is also effective.

Have proper portion sizes in a balanced diet
Vegetables are rich in anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins, protein, and fiber which help to keep the blood glucose level in control. Asparagus, beans, spinach, tomatoes, red onions, carrots, broccoli are good to include in the daily diet to lower A1C levels. No-fat yogurt is a rich source of calcium, protein, and zinc which can be used for making parfaits. Preventative flavonoids are available in green and black tea. For diabetic people, it is good to have freshly brewed tea drinks and avoid caffeinated products. Flaxseed is a promising source of omega-3 fatty acids which can be taken in form of salads or cereals. Although nuts are good for cholesterol lowering, they are high in calorie content. So, patients should eat them in moderation.

Eat more fruits
Cranberries, red grapefruit, and blueberries are also a good source for lowering the LDL cholesterol. Similar effects are found with apple. Cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, raspberries are an excellent source of antioxidants, potassium, folate and vitamin C. however, for better regulation of blood sugar, the fruits should be eaten in moderation.

Managing how many carbohydrates you are eating at one time is essential to monitor and lower A1C levels. 45–60 grams of carbohydrates per serving of main meals is recommended while 15–30 grams of carbohydrates for each snack are allowed for maintaining lower A1C levels. If you can follow a food chart, you can easily calculate and check what changes to bring in the food behavior.

Follow a diabetes medical management plan
Consult with your health provider to create a diabetes medical management plan; it will essentially include the medical instructions, emergency contact numbers, the target blood glucose levels, regular medication list and how often they should be taken. This would help to manage diabetes safely as the doctor can also easily refer to it and diagnose the immediate necessary actions. Also, keep a note of the regular blood sugar levels so your doctor can relate to what certain food or medications need to be changed or continued. Do not go for any change on your own; always consult your doctor.

Quit smoking
