Persistent Dry Cough – How to deal with it

Everyone will agree that a persistent dry cough is as irritating as it can be. It is never fun to suffer from that condition. This problem makes it harder to talk, it is difficult to be in a room especially in your classes, or office meetings as a cough not only irritate you but everyone around as well and take a toll on your routine.

A dry cough can be caused by some reasons like allergies, pollution, dry air, sore throat, smoking, etc. Lack of mucus and phlegm gives rise to a persistent dry cough, and it is related to a tickly cough as a cough is caused due to a tickle-like feeling in your throat. As a result, you keep on coughing, and the lack of mucus makes it a dry irritating cough. After a bit, your throat starts to give way to burning sensation causing more dry coughs, and it becomes unmanageable.

However, you can soothe your throat and ultimately reduce the persistent dry cough. There are some extremely helpful and effective natural remedies that you can adopt, to give your throat relief and thus lessen the intensity of a dry cough.

Honey

This is the best natural remedy that you can take for a dry cough. The effects are marvelous, and you can feel the relief as soon as you consume honey. Honey helps to coat the sensitive mucous membrane and soothes your throat instantly. Take a tablespoon full of honey directly for 2 to three times daily, until you recover. Consuming honey before sleep is also a good idea as it will help you to get sound sleep without any irritation from a cough.

Ginger

Ginger is also another excellent remedy for a dry cough. The best way to take ginger is to make ginger juice and mix that juice with honey and lemon tea. This will work like wonder on your sore throat and relieve you from the irritating cough you are experiencing.

Clove

Clove is yet another fantastic natural remedy for a dry cough. You can keep one in your mouth and bite into in slowly. The raw clove juice provides excellent relief to dry a cough. You can also make tea with clove. Boil it in the water with honey and ginger juice and then add the tea. Brew it and drink it for an effective treatment of persistent dry cough.

Basil

Another famed remedy for persistent dry cough, basil has been used for ages in the east. You can make basil tea, or you can just take a spoonful of fresh basil juice with honey. If you are planning to make tea, then add ginger, cloves, a pinch of freshly grounded black pepper and honey as well. Drink this tea every 2 hours throughout the day, and you will see improvement shortly.

Steam

This is perhaps the most underrated remedy for persistent dry cough. This is perfect for dealing with dry mucus and phlegm. Inhaling steam loosens up the mucus and the phlegm that is stored in your trachea and the lungs and gives relief instantly. You can also add some essential oils like tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil for more healing effects. Make sure that you can inhale a good amount of steam, but don’t burn your face in the process, be careful.

Stop smoking

Smoking is one of the prominent cause of a dry cough. Whether you are actively participating in smoking or passively, the smoke settles in your lungs causing a hard to breathe situation for you, ultimately leading to constant coughing. This may be the millionth time you hear this, but smoking is bad for your health, and the dry cough won’t go away until you stop smoking. Passive smoking is like being present in an atmosphere where your surrounding people are smoking, but you aren’t.It also shows the same signs of active smoking. So, don’t stay in a place where your friends are smoking as the symptoms for both are remarkably similar.

Use a pollution mask

As the world pollution level increases with each day, the presence of pollutants in earth’s atmosphere has increased to a massively dangerous level. These pollutants enter your body through the nose when you breathe. They can cause allergies and even serious conditions like bronchitis and tuberculosis. If these pollutants settle in your throat or lungs, they can result in a constant and irritating dry cough. So wear a mask to protect yourself from these pollutants.

You should follow these simple yet effective remedies and precautions to cure yourself of a persistent dry cough. If the problem persists, you can try over the counter medications or better yet, consult your doctor.
