Thyroid cancer – 7 foods to avoid

Thyroid cancer, a type of endocrine cancer, is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells in the thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland below the Adam’s apple. Patients with this disorder might not exhibit symptoms at first. But as it worsens, one might report swelling in the neck, changes in voice, difficulty swallowing, and other discomforts. The good news is that thyroid cancer is highly treatable and has a good cure rate.

Thyroid cancer – Foods to avoid
Research shows that various factors increase the risk of this cancer, such as a family history of the disorder and foods with less iodine. Here are a few foods to avoid for thyroid cancer prevention and management:

Pork
People who add a lot of pork and poultry to their meals are known to have a higher risk of thyroid cancer. Hence, patients are advised to avoid pork, chicken, and other poultry options.

Tea
One of the most loved beverages, tea, must also be avoided, as too much can worsen the symptoms. It can also increase the risk in those who do not have the condition.

Milk
Although considered healthy, milk and other dairy products might be associated with cancer. Multiple research studies ascertain that options like butter and cheese are linked to an increased thyroid cancer risk.

Cabbage
A cruciferous vegetable, cabbage is often termed goitrogenic, meaning it can interfere with the thyroid gland’s functioning. Although cabbage can increase the risk of thyroid cancer, it is regarded as helpful for other cancers. Hence, it is best to seek the advice of a healthcare expert before including this veggie in the meals.

Kale
Kale is a known mild goitrogen and might prevent the thyroid from getting enough iodine. This can, in turn, increase the risk of diseases affecting the thyroid gland and its functions.

Wheat
Grains like wheat, rye, and barley contain gluten. If someone with thyroid cancer also has celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it can cause further damage to the thyroid gland. Such individuals must consider switching to gluten-free foods to prevent thyroid diseases and cancer.

Broccoli
Broccoli might be considered one of the most nutrition-rich vegetables, but it can affect the working of the thyroid gland. Some studies have shown that vegetables like broccoli inhibit the absorption of iodine and cause immense harm to the thyroid gland, making one susceptible to thyroid-related diseases and even cancer.

If one has an increased risk of thyroid cancer, they should go for regular check-ups to diagnose the condition early. For treatment, doctors might recommend GAVRETO, a targeted therapy for cancers caused by abnormal RET genes. Other options include tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy, which reduces tumor size and infiltration, and radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, where radiation destroys all the thyroid cells, including cancerous ones.
