Nutritional changes and treatments to manage osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disorder that results in the gradual deterioration of bone health. The bones become brittle and weak, thus increasing the risk of fractures among older men and women. Women are at higher risk of developing the symptoms early in comparison to men. Lifestyle choices, existing medical conditions, and a family history of the condition also increase the risk. Treatments include a combination of medications and the following nutritional changes to supplement good bone health.

Nutritional changes for osteoporosis
Foods, supplements, and multivitamins can be included to boost bone health in addition to the existing treatments done under a patient assistance program for Prolia®. These include the ones rich in calcium, vitamins D, C, K, magnesium, and potassium that help fortify bone heath.

Fresh fruits and vegetables
Green and leafy vegetables pack a ton of calcium. These mainly include spinach, broccoli, kale, okra, Brussel sprouts, and various greens like collard, mustard, turnip, and dandelion greens. Additionally, starchy veggies like potatoes, sweet potatoes, plantain and even artichokes must be included to supplement the vitamin K requirements. Studies suggest that vitamin K foods help increase bone density. Papayas, oranges, grapefruits, figs, bananas, prunes, pineapples, and a handful of raisins can be included in daily meals.

Dairy and seafood
The daily calcium intake must be fortified with veggies rich in vitamin D and low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese, sardines, salmon, mackerel, and tuna. Research indicates that vitamin D plays a key role in helping the body better absorb calcium and promote bone mineralization for better density.

Fortified foods for breakfast
A wide range of fortified cereals, bread, juices, and milk alternatives for people with lactose intolerance can be included for breakfast. For example, some brands of orange juice, soy milk, rice milk, and grain cereals fortify their yield with both calcium and vitamin D. This increases one’s intake of vital nutrients per bowl or serving.

Common treatment options for osteoporosis
Medications are the first line of defense when it comes to treating this progressive form of arthritis. Certain classes of medicines like bisphosphonates and RANK ligand inhibitors are recommended for symptom and treatment management. There are several branded weekly pills, monthly pills, and IV infusions used for osteoporosis treatment. Prolia® is a popular option among prescription medications. It is an injection that prevents bone loss by blocking receptors in the body.

Patient assistance program for Prolia®
This prescription is generally suggested for increasing bone mass among men with a high risk of fracture and women who experience osteoporosis after menopause. Prolia® injections are covered by both Medicare B (medical benefit) and Medicare D (pharmacy benefit) to help pay for the treatment that is administered once in six months. Most patients who have supplemental insurance do not have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses.

Getting a Prolia® Co-pay Program card ensures patients pay $25 or less per dose of the medication. Eligible commercial insurance holders also enjoy a maximum benefit of $1,500 per calendar year that should be sufficient to cover the list price of the medication. Prolia® is currently offering manufacturer coupons to provide for out-of-pocket expenses exceeding $25 per dose per patient.
