What Are Amino Acids?

When you eat a piece of chicken, a cup of lentils, or a hard-boiled egg, your digestive system doesn't absorb protein as one intact molecule. It breaks it down into its smallest units: amino acids. These are the individual chemical compounds that link together in long chains — called polypeptides — to form every protein in your body.

Essential Amino Acids (EAAs)

There are nine amino acids your body cannot manufacture: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Because they must come entirely from food, they are called essential. A diet consistently short on any one of them can limit the body's ability to carry out the protein-dependent processes that rely on it.

Non-Essential Amino Acids

Eleven amino acids — including glutamine, glycine, alanine, and asparagine — can be synthesized by the body from other compounds. They are called non-essential not because they are unimportant, but because dietary intake is not strictly required under normal circumstances.

Conditionally Essential Amino Acids

A subset of non-essential amino acids become essential during illness, injury, intense physical stress, or certain life stages. Complete vs. Incomplete Protein Sources

Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, and to melatonin, which influences sleep. Tyrosine (non-essential, but derived from phenylalanine) contributes to the production of dopamine and norepinephrine. Leucine plays a particularly prominent role in signaling muscle protein synthesis after physical activity.

These connections are why researchers study amino acid intake not only in the context of athletic performance, but also in areas like cognitive function, immune response, and gut health.
